The refurbished Ringmer library, which reopened in 2016, is threatened with closure.
Johnny Denis, newly-elected District Councillor, is angry over County Council plans to shut Ringmer library and the mobile library service.
East Sussex County Council is to consult over closures of 7 libraries across the county and the cancellation of the mobile library service to people in 88 communities across East Sussex including 11 in Lewes District.
Johnny says, “what they fail to realise is that this cost-cutting exercise cuts right at the heart of our communities. Libraries, like the one at Ringmer, are an integral part of the community. Cutting libraries undermines the whole community as well scoring an own goal on the campaign for improving literacy”
“Killing off the mobile library service is attacking villages across the county. Eleven communities in Lewes District, including Firle in my ward, will lose their service. The plan should be about revitalisation and increasing reader numbers not ending a service”
The proposed “Libraries Transformation Programme” will be discussed at East Sussex County Council Cabinet on the 19th September. If the cabinet agrees to take it forward a consultation will be held from 21st September to 14th December.
